Navan Cosmos hopes of making it through to a next round match against League of Ireland Premier side Shamrock Rovers in the Leinster Senior Cup ended in the Mdl grounds on Sunday.
The Navan side were edged out on penos by Thomastown Utd 3-4 after the side drew 1-1 after extra time. It started so well for Cosmos, who went close on a couple of occasions before they eventually went ahead through a Conor Walsh goal after 20 minutes, Cosmos were bossing the game and could have had another couple of goals to their name before half time but for some great goalkeeping and poor finishing, but they had to settle for a 1-0 halftime lead.
Thomastown came out in the second half with a bit more purpose and although they were putting pressure on the Cosmos backline, they didnt really threaten Gilly in the Cosmos net. At the other end, Walsh, Carney and new signing Burke had chances to get that all important second goal, but again the Thomastown keeper kept his side in the game with a couple of great saves and you began to get the feeling that Cosmos were going to pay for missing these chances, and that is what happened in the last 2 mins when, Thomastown were awarded a free just outside the box, the shot was parried on to the crossbar but the Thomastown forwards were quickest to the rebound and headed into a empty net, 1-1 the game finished after 90 mins and into extra time it went. Although there were only a couple of chances in extra time it would be Cosmos again who would get the clearer of these chances when first, Burke hit his shot over the bar from inside the box, then in the final moments a shot from full back Paul Delaney only needed a touch at the back post to win the game but Carney just couldnt reach the ball and it went out for a goalkick.
So penos it was, and although Cosmos got off to the perfect start it was the Kilkenny side who would hold their nerve and progress into the next round and that glamour tie against Shamrock Rovers in Tallagh Stadium.
