Navan side Parkvilla emerged victorious at the Convent grounds this morning but the home side can be proud of their performance and take plenty of positives from this game.
It wasn’t looking good for the home side in the early stages as Jamie Blake cut inside from the left and finished low and hard to the far post from 15 yards out, leaving Paul Sheridan with no chance.
However to their credit, our lads really put it up to the premier side until the interval and had clear opportunities to level the game up. The home side pressed high and caught out the Villa in possession one more than one occasion, which led to clear cut chances for Jack Kelly and Coleman Murray. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be for either on those occasions as home side went into the break with a one nil deficit.
Cian Quinn was a constant thorn for Villa with his skill on the ball and the number 10 was fouled on several occasions as he advanced up the pitch, with Kevin Kelly breaking up play in the middle.
A key moment in the game saw Athboy reduced to 10 men on 60 mins when skipper Eamon Cusack was given his marching orders for a late challenge. From here on, it was an uphill task and Parkvilla eventually made the extra man count when they added goals on 70 and 78 mins.
Paul Sheridan came to the fore at different stages throughout the game when he made some superb saves, most notably 5 mins from time when a towering header from the Villa number 5 was somehow turned around the post.
Well done to all the Athboy lads today who played their part with a solid honest performance, on another day with the rub of the green it could have been a different scoreline.
Our lads focus more importantly reverts to league matters next Sunday with another home match versus Donnacarney, 11.15 KO on Sunday 7th April.
Best of luck to Parkvilla FC for the season.
