Sunday 19th sees the Playoff Final for the inaugural UHY Farrelly Dawe White North East Football League Women’s Section. Balbriggan v Kingscourt is sure to throw up a highly entertaining game to see who gets the title of Women’s Champions.
Both teams are well used to each other as they were both in the North Division of the league. Their first game in July ended up with a 3 nil win for the ‘Harps from Cavan, but their Dublin counterparts got their revenge in the return game in Sept with a close 2 -1 win in St. Mologas Park. Indeed the season has been a race between the 2 teams to see who would end up topping the division. That honour went to Balbriggan who with 30 points just pipped Kingscourt who finished on 28.
In the playoff semi finals Kingscourt travelled to Kentstown to play Balrath, who finished top of the South Division, and Balbriggan had home advantage against Kentstown who finished second, in a Champions League style draw. Both teams showed why they are in Sunday’s Final by coming through those tough tests with classy displays.
It will be hard to pick the favourites for this game – both teams are very well drilled and play very direct football. The strength of both teams possibly lie in their midfields and it will be fascinating to see who comes out on top of what will hopefully be a show of the immense football talent that is here in the North East. Managers Davy Byrne and Paul Brennan will both be hoping that their girls will come up trumps. Best of luck to them both.
