Athboy left Trim on Good Friday last with a share of the spoils to bring Town’s 100% league record to an end. On a beautiful warm evening, both sides will feel they had the chances to secure victory but it wasn’t to be due to a combination of quality goalkeeping and below par finishing.

The game started at a decent pace and it was the home side who drew first blood as they caught out our defence 9 minutes in. Trim attacked down their left wing and crossed a low dangerous ball across the area that was finished well by the Trim attacker 8 yards out. This was a blow to the confidence of the Athboy lads, particularly after their performance and result the week previous. However, it wasn’t long before our lads dusted themselves off and back on terms when winger Cian Quinn curled in a delicious effort from 25 yards with his left peg. It was a fitting finish to a good move for Athboy with Eamon Cusack winning the ball on the left wing before passes were exchanged between full-back Glenn Darcy, and then Kevin Kelly who showed strength to dribble across the park and feed Quinn on 18 minutes. At this stage those looking on probably felt they were in for a real goal fest.

Just before the interval, forward Jack Kelly was unlucky with a low shot inside the box that ran across the line after hitting the post, and into the thankful hands of Trim net minder Seanie Bell. The second half was quite stop start with plenty of scrappy periods of play. Both sides looked threatening from corners but ultimately couldn’t make them count where it mattered.  Luke Byrne brought a good save out of keeper Bell with a shot from distance on 65 minutes but clear chances on goal for strikers Kelly and Colman Murray were few and far between. Trim certainly had opportunities to snatch all three points too with number 9 Ian Keenan seeing his 25 yard free kick turned around the post by Athboy shot stopper Paul Sheridan, after it seemed destined for the top corner. The same player had a chance at the very end too, with a shot from 12 yards that was again denied by the superb Sheridan.

Neither sides were satisfied with a point but had to settle for it in the end. Best of luck to Trim Town for the season.
