Virginia punished Athboy in clinical fashion with three clinical goals from corners to grab all three points on their visit to the Convent grounds on Sunday last.
A depleted Athboy squad had four starters missing compared to their last match, with Kieran Forde, Adam Uzell, Cian Farrelly and Aaron Daly stepping up to fill the voids. It started brightly for the Athboy lads with Aaron Daly almost scoring in the first 10 mins with a close range effort, but his effort finished high over the bar from 5 yards. Cian Quinn was next to have a go on 15 mins when he cut in form the left wing beating his man and shooting from just inside the penalty area towards the far post, only for the Virginia shot stopper to produce an excellent save turning the ball around the post.
Soon after, Paul Sheridan was called into action when he made a superb save from a Virginia shot from the left wing. It was 22 minutes in when the home side broke the deadlock via Aaron Daly. Eamon Cusack advanced infield from the right wing with the ball and scooped the ball up and over the defence to the left of centre, when Daly pounced and chipped the goalkeeper from 12 yards. It was an excellent finish from Daly and from here it looked like the home side would kick on from this.
However, Virginia had other ideas and hit back via two corners before the break with two dangerous balls into the 6 yard box, that were not dealt with at all well by the lads in black and yellow and ended up in the back of the net. The second half was a scrappy enough affair and our lads had plenty of possession but seemed to get dispossessed in the final third most of the time, when perhaps sharp incisive passing could have been more effective against a resolute defence. Virginia confirmed the 3 points on 75 mins when another corner floated to the back post was nodded in by their attacker form 4 yards out.
The game finished 3-1 and although the home side were weakened, it was certainly a below par performance. Well done to Virginia, who punished Athboy for some naïve defending and deserved the win.. Best of luck to Virginia for the season.
