The Athboy lads suffered their third defeat of the season in this division 2 encounter at the Convent grounds this morning.
The visitors started best with a couple of chances early on but netminder Paul Sheridan stood firm and denied the away side.
Athboy found a steady foothold in the game after the first 10-15 minutes and had an excellent opportunity to take the lead on 23 mins when a great cross found Luke Byrne 8 yards out centrally only for the attacker to head straight at the Donnacarney number 1.
Centre half Adrian Noone picked up a second yellow on 40 mins for a late tackle and this naturally changed the complection of the game. It was scoreless at the break and it was the away side that made the extra man count in the second half when they broke the deadlock on 65 mins following a swift counter attack. A quick corner by our lads was dispossessed deep in opposition half and Donnacarney broke fast up the pitch and and finished well.
A second and decisive goal was added 10 mins later when the ball was bundled across the line from a couple of yards out, when it appeared the Donnacarney attacker was offside.
To their credit, the Athboy lads battled on to get back into the game and came close when Cian Quinn found Colman Murray with an exquisite pass and the striker forced a good save out of the away keeper.
It was not to be today though with Donnacarney leaving with the victory and maximum points. Our lads will have to pick themselves up with Bailebore due over next Sunday.
Big shout out to those that came along to cheer on the lads earlier.
Best of luck to Donnacarney for the season.
